Birds and Bees Thursday, Jul 26 2007

Poor little hummingbird. He’s not able to drink the sugar water because the honey bees have taken over the feeder.

Meanwhile, he sits by the tree and waits his turn.

Later on in the evening…the bees are gone, and he comes back hoping the bees left him some.

Woodpecker

He’s back!!!

I just love these Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Of all the feathery friends we’ve had this year, these are my absolute favorites. They’re very shy, though. As soon as we come to the window, they fly away. We have a "bird-watching" corner in the family room, with the camera and field guides ready to go. The kids are really learning their names; even our 4 year old knows the names of 7 species. I’d like to learn their bird calls. Maybe next year. Right now we’re enjoying our short, but captivating visits.

Our newest little visitors… Monday, Jun 11 2007

Gold Finches. I was so thrilled to finally see American Godfinches on our bird feeders today. We have been waiting for weeks, and finally they came this morning. They are so beautiful up close. I just wish my camera worked well. The pictures aren’t very clear : (   It’s been on its last leg for months now, so I feel lucky to have been able to get these pictures. Enjoy them!

I love how the little guy is watching us.

Real learning this week Thursday, Jun 7 2007

The kids down the street found a Spotted Turtle in their back yard. They had a lot of fun watching it and studying it, and were very sad to let it go.

And here are more bird-watching pictures from last night.

The Blue Jay is actually on our front porch. He was pecking at the Woodpecker food brick I bought last week. I left it there until I found a place in the back yard for it, but I guess I’ll leave it there since the Blue Jay seems to like it.
